Scion iM Concept revealed at the L.A. Auto Show on Nov. 19, 2014Michael Bettencourt

What is it

The Scion iM Concept is coming to Canada, in a tamer production version, which will debut at the New York auto show in April. But don't expect it to come out of the Corolla plant in Cambridge, Ontario, even though it's mechanically related. That plant is already running at full capacity, according to a high-ranking Toyota Canada executive.

Signature feature

The selfie-stick: that's what Scion gave out after its press conference to underscore its youthful cool factor, instead of the usual USB or press kit.

What else is new

The car itself is a sharp-looking five-door done up to resemble European touring car racers, and built by well-known aftermarket tuning firm 5 Axis, with a lowered adjustable-height suspension, prominent front wing and race-inspired four-piston front calipers.

Under the hood

No powertrain details released yet, but considering the price mentioned and the car's emphasis on "excellent fuel efficiency, sporty handling and easy parking," the focus will be more on performance at the pump and overall practicality.

When can we buy it, and for how much

Scion execs suggested that the production iM would start "under $20,000," and would come to market soon after the demise of one of Canada's most popular hatchbacks, the Toyota Matrix.

Cool quotient: 3.5/5
