Nissan is taking the Big Apple by storm with the latest incarnation of its flagship sports car, the 2017 GT-R. It’s the biggest change since it debuted in 2007. And make no mistake – it’s bolder and more powerful. On the front fascia is Nissan’s new signature “V-motion” grille. At the rear, the GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights and quad exhaust tips create a sporty, aggressive look. Big, muscular 20-inch 15-spoke forged aluminum wheels and side air vents are functional and aesthetically pleasing – all designed to make it more aerodynamic.

Godzilla is back in New York. The new Nissan GT-R

Inside, the GT-R – nicknamed Godzilla – is more upscale with a new dashboard layout that’s clean and simplified. Even the number of switches have dropped from 27 to 11 to make it less distracting and easier to find commands behind the wheel. The centre touch monitor has also grown from 7 to 8 inches for improved visibility.

But the big news is under the hood. Extra power: In this case, the GT-R’s 3.8-litre V-6 twin-turbocharged engine now delivers 565 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque – that’s up 20 hp and 4 lb-ft from the last model. The engine is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. A more rigid body structure and new suspension should improve the ride, too.

When can we buy it, and for how much?

The 2017 Nissan GT-R hits showrooms this summer. No pricing yet.

Cool quotient

4 stars (out of 5)

Sure the GT-R is Nissan’s low-volume high-performance sports car, but that adds to the appeal. A bolder design and more power raises the cool quotient even higher.
