Garmin DriveSmart 70LMT GPS

  • Available at: garmin.com
  • Price: $469.99

Many newer cars have GPS systems installed and smartphones are getting smarter, so aftermarket GPS manufacturers had to up their game. Garmin certainly did, and scored with the DriveSmart 70LMT.

Its 7-inch screen is large but if you require the map to be even more detailed, use the pinch gesture to zoom in. It offers loads of information and has features beyond telling you to turn left in 200 metres. It knows traffic conditions, school zones, rail crossings and detects upcoming sharp curves. Let the voice tell you to, "Turn at Fourth Avenue," or use the recognizable landmarks feature to "Turn left at the gas station." Voice control allows you to set your course and it pairs with your smartphone to help you place and respond to calls and see texts, all hands-free. It offers a lifetime of map updates and millions of Foursquare points of interest for those long summer road trips.

Speaking of long trips, the fatigue warning will suggest you take a break at a rest stop as indicated on the map.

And even though it's pricey, the Garmin DriveSmart is capable of turning a no-frills econobox into a highway queen. It is compatible with the Garmin BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera and the Garmin BabyCam which, naturally, are sold separately.
