Round one has ended.
The Globe's esteemed Aesthetics Panel (a group of Globe and Mail staff and freelance journalists) is sifting through some of the ugliest cars ever built to determine the absolute ugliest.
Over the next week we will run a series of four polls in a March Madness-style bracket. The winners – or losers as they may be – will move on to the next round and the winner will be announced Nov. 27.
Here are the first eight match-ups chosen from 16 of what we believe are the ugliest cars ever made:
The Aztek was sold between 2001 and 2005 as a mid-size crossover. It has a lot of cargo space, but has made many lists of the ugliest cars of all time.
The Fury was produced from 1956 to 1978 and designed to be a sporty premium-priced model that would attract consumers to showrooms.
Manufactured by Ford from 1958 to 1960, the Edsel never gained popularity and lost millions the company. The word "Edsel" became a symbol for failure.
The Ami was sold between 1961 and 1978 as a supermini. It was the best-selling car in France for a few years selling almost two million vehicles.
The Pacer is a two-door compact that was produced between 1975 and 1980. AMC's chief stylist anticipated an increase in demand for smaller cars. In the 1970s Car and Driver referred to it as "The Flying Fishbowl."
The Datsun F10, as it was called in North America, was produced in the late 1970s.
The Ford Pinto was produced throughout the 1970s with more than three million sold.
The subcompact Gremlin was produced between 1970 and 1978. The car was a big hit during the fuel crisis in the U.S.
The Multipla was produced by Fiat between 1998 and 2010. The design was displayed at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1999, but talent-show host Simon Cowell referred to the car as looking like it had a disease.
The Smart Fortwo is a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-seater introduced by Daimler AG in 1998. It can be parked perpendicularly in spaces designed for parallel parking.
The PT Cruiser is a 5-door hatchback launched by Chrysler in 2000. The PT stands for "Personal Transport."
The Cube began production in 1998 and entered the North American market in 2009. The biggest notable feature is the wrap-around rear window.
The Tatra 603 is a large rear-engine luxury car made in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In Communist Czechoslovakia only high-ranking officials were driven in the 603.
Only nine Venenos were built in 2013 as it was a limited production machine and the cost is $4.1 million.
The X-90 was produced between 1995 and 1997. It has the front end of a Japanese economy car and the back end of a miniaturized pickup.
The Juke is a mini SUV that began production in 2010 with a high waistline and slim side windows.
