you & your car

I recently picked up my car from the body shop after it had been repaired following an accident. The guy told me not to wax the car for at least 30 days, to allow time for the paint to fully dry. Is that normal? – Wayne

Paint manufacturers do not recommend using a sealant on fresh paint because they want it to dry completely through.

Paint is mixed with solvents or thinners to the taste of the person applying the paint, including clear coat depending on the equipment being used, the paint booth itself and other factors. These solvents dry off fairly quickly, at least those on or near the surface. The reason to allow 30 days or so is to ensure any and all solvents have time to evaporate. Basically, anything that causes water to bead on the surface, whether it be wax, sealer or detailer should be avoided for this period of time.
