To celebrate Mustang's 50th anniversary, Ford will put a car on the 86th floor observation deck of the the Empire State Building in New York. The task required meticulous planning to disassemble the car to fit into the elevators of the art deco landmark.
This is the second time a car has been displayed at this height. The same company, DST Industries, placed a 1966 Mustang convertible on the observation deck in 1965. Then, only the steering wheel gave them any trouble, forcing them to tip that section of the car to fit into the elevator.
To prepare for the move, a scale model of the car and a wood mockup of the smallest elevator were used to ensure the process would go smoothly. The observation deck is only closed between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., leaving just a six hour window to complete the task.
