I am accustomed to bumping into car company bosses at big auto shows like the Frankfurt Motor Show. But champion Formula One race car drivers?
Yet there was Sebastian Vettel, the Infiniti Red Bull driver who is so far head in the F1 standings… well, his rivals need the Hubble Telescope to see him.
To date, Vettel has won six races and has a 53-point lead in the drivers’ standings over No. 2 Fernando Alonso – closest in wins to Vettel with two. No one else has more than one win. Alonso has no chance of winning the drivers’ title, and Infiniti Red Bull has all but wrapped up the constructors’ title, too.More »

Sales of the Nissan Leaf plug-in car soared 180 per cent in August. On the year, sales of the Leaf have nearly doubled.
Over at General Motors Canada, the Volt plug-in also had a relatively great month. Alas, the Toyota Prius plug-in did not fare quite as well, with a sales number so low I am sad even to mention it. But I will. Be patient.More »

The stunning reliability of the Toyota Prius hybrid is matched only by its taxi-cab design. That’s the truth of it. Toyota Motor knows it and Toyota’s rivals know it, too. And now we have a better idea of what Toyota is going to do about it.
Last week in the aftermath of the interesting news that Ford Motor is pulling out of its hybrid partnership with Toyota, the world’s No. 1 car company by sales unleashed a barrage of news about the company’s future hybrid plans. For a company always reluctant to chat about the product pipeline, the announcements were shocking.More »

Honda gave the 2013 Accord mid-size sedan a complete makeover and the public reaction has been better than even the most ardent Honda optimist could have hoped for: triple-digit sales growth through the end of July.
The Accord, in fact, displaced Toyota’s aging Camry for a top 10 spot among Canada’s best-selling passenger cars through the first seven months of 2013, according to the latest figures from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.More »

Mitchell Clark of Profit Confidential’s statement about Tesla Motors is typical of what the company’s cheerleaders are saying these days: “What (Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon) Musk is creating is entrepreneurship at its finest.”
Now I am no expert on entrepreneurship and I know almost nothing about stock promoting. But I do know a thing or two about car companies. So when I noticed that Tesla Motors yesterday had a market cap of $17.6-billion (all figures in U.S. dollars), I about fell out of my chair.More »

Quietly, methodically, and with careful planning skills as rich and deep as any car company could hope for, the Volkswagen Group is poised to become the world’s biggest car company. That would mean annual sales of more than 10 million globally and by extension at least 100,000 in Canada by 2018, if not sooner.More »

A fierce struggle to wear the crown of Canada’s best-selling car is shaping up to be a fight for the ages – and one that is leaving a wake of carnage behind.
Honda Canada, battling to retain the Civic’s status as Canada’s best-selling car for a 15th straight year, is locking horns with a Hyundai Canada obviously committed to unseating the Civic with its compact Elantra.More »

The City of Detroit is bankrupt, not the city’s car companies. Let’s remember that. The Detroit Three are, in fact, far, far from bankrupt. Don’t believe me – believe the numbers.
Today, Ford Motor announced that second-quarter profit was up 19 per cent to $1.23-billion (all figures in U.S. dollars). This despite heavy losses in Europe, losses the company says will be less this year than last.More »

You know the “green car” conversation has changed when a news release lands with the headline: Corvette Stingray Most Efficient Sports Car on the Market.
Does anyone really care that the 455 horsepower 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will get an EPA-estimated 29 miles per gallon (highway) in the United States or 8.1 litres/100 km converted to the metric system? That’s better than a V-6 Toyota Sienna minivan.More »

Ram pickup sales are up 20 per cent this year and it’s not simply because Chrysler Canada is offering discounts of $7,000 or more, plus 2.99 per cent financing for three years. The Ram is a very good pickup, as well.
In fact, the Ram is Canada’s second best-selling vehicle – period. Only the arch-rival Ford F-Series out-sells the Ram. And no car is even close to either when it comes to sales.More »
