In photos: Don Draper's Imperial Crown Convertible could be yours
The drop top land yacht Jon Hamm's character drove in Season 4 of Mad Men is going under the hammer starting Wednesday. The 1964 Imperial Crown Convertible was one of just 922 made and fewer than 200 are believed to still be on the road. It was often referred to as a 'Chrysler Imperial', but Imperial was its own brand after 1955. Chrysler spun it off to compete against Lincoln and Cadillac. "Sporting aviator glasses, white shirt and black tie to match his grey suit, Don Draper, epitomizes the successful businessman out for a Sunday spin in this very special car," reads the description on the auction page. "There's an old adage that you '...ride in a Cadillac, you glide in a Lincoln, but you float in an Imperial'. So true!" This boat comes with a V-8 engine, a 727 TorqueFlite push button automatic transmission, power steering, brakes, windows and antenna, a working AM-FM radio and an electric top. It is believed to be all original except for a paint job about two decades ago and new carpeting. This car is no doubt the big ticket item alongside 149 other items being auctioned such as Michael Ginsberg's television, a number of Draper’s ties and even Draper's Ray Bans. Draper's Imperial was sold last February at a Palm Springs auction for $23,625 (U.S.). Draper's 1965 Cadillac Coupe DeVille used in the final season sold for $48,980 (U.S.) in August. The auction runs from June 1 to 15.
