In photos: One-of-a-kind, ‘wild’ Lamborghini may set record at New York auction

A unique Lamborghini concept with an open cockpit is expected to fetch upwards of $3 million when it goes under the hammer at an RM Sotheby’s auction in New York City in November. The 2006 Gallardo Concept S was first shown at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. That original concept didn’t move, but was such a hit that Lamborghini decided to make a second one – and this one came with a V-10 engine. The display model can still be seen at the Lamborghini museum. The one that could be driven was sold to a private collector and will now make its way to the auction block. The concept, designed by Luc Donckerwolke before he became Bentley’s head of design (he has since left Bentley), had the same sharp angles as the Gallardo coupe, but with more radical lines, low-profile wind deflectors and an open cockpit. The Concept S sports the ‘001’ chassis number and has been driven 180 kilometres. Not bad for a 10-year-old car. Lamborghini initially planned a limited production for the car, but the high cost of labour meant it only made one. “The Gallardo Concept S is downright wild,” said Ian Keller, managing director of RM Sotheby’s West Coast division, in a statement. “The Lamborghini’s blend of avant-garde style and uniqueness sets the tone for what will be a theme carried throughout the entire catalogue.” The Concept S will be a part of the Art Automobiles sale run by RM Sotheby’s in Manhattan this November. RM’s last auction in Manhattan was in 2013 when bidders paid more than $63 million in just more than two hours. “The automobile offering will again feature a selection of vehicles hand-picked for their rarity, significance to design, engineering, and for the outstanding achievement they represent in their respective category,” reads a statement. The record for a Lamborghini sold at auction was set in 2009 when a Reventon sold for $2.5 million, according to Sports Car Market.
