A rare Ferrari led a prestigious pack of 25 cars – including Lamborghinis, Porsches, Bugattis and a McLaren – when it sold for $17.6 million at Thursday’s RM Sotheby’s auction in Monterey, Calif.
In total, the 25 cars from a private collection fetched $67 million (all figures U.S.), which was short of RM’s estimated $80 million, but still a record for a single-day auction. The sale is taking place as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti, which sold for $17.6 million, is the 23rd of only 32 ever produced. It was shown at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1966 and competed in the Le Mans Classic. Even though the car was campaigned frequently, it never had a major accident and it is in “exceptionally original condition”, notes the RM site.
RM expected that a yellow 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizion would fetch the highest price, with a pre-bid estimated price of $17 million. However, it failed to find a buyer.
A 1998 McLaren F1 sold for $13.8 million, a record for that car. And a 2005 Ferrari Enzo, built as a gift for Pope John Paul II, sold for $6.1 million.
The previous record for a single-day sale was $66 million, set by Bonhams last year. That auction included the sale of a Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta for $38.1 million – the highest price ever paid for a car sold publicly.
Public auctions by RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co. and Bonhams continue through Aug. 16 in California as part of the annual car show.
