Deals of the week: Jeep diesels are coming, old stock must go Add to ...

This week, the Chrysler Group’s Jeep brand unwrapped the 2014 version of its up-market Grand Cherokee, a mid-cycle facelift that includes the arrival of a Fiat-supplied 3.0-litre diesel engine among the powertrain choices.

Jeep once before sold a Grand Cherokee with a diesel – a loud, smelly, not-very-clean and not particularly fuel efficient oil-burner supplied by then-parent Daimler AG. It was not a success. The new diesel will surely be a hit, however and the irony is that this Italian diesel is going in a Grand Cherokee based on a platform and fundamental engineering that has its roots in – wait for it – Chrysler’s former relationship with Daimler. Yes, there is much in common between the Grand Cherokee and Mercedes-Benz’ ML SUV.

With an updated Grand Cherokee in the pipeline, and with everyone knowing it, Jeep needs to keep the outgoing 2013 appealing right now. So you’ll find a $2,500 cash discount (and it can be combined with 3.99 per cent finance rate for 36-60 months) on the very sexy and very fast Grand Cherokee SRT8. Yes, the 2014 version has all sorts of improvements, but the 2013 model ($56,295) is very much track-ready. If you want a go-fast SUV, this is a good buy.

At the other end of the spectrum, Hyundai continues to push the Elantra compact. This makes sense. The so-called Elantra family (sedan, coupe and four-door hatchback) accounted for more than one-third of all Hyundais sold in Canada last year. How many is that? Elantras of various kinds added up to sales of 50,950 units in 2012. That’s a year-on-year increase of 13.3 per cent. Hyundai Canada in total sold just slightly more than 136,000 vehicles last year.

To juice sales of the 2013 Elantra sedan, buyers will find more than $2,000 in factory discount in play on limited edition models – discounts that can be combined a 2.99 per cent finance rate for up to 96 months or 5.49 lease rate for up to 48 months.

Deals of the Week also noticed a $4,000 cash discount on a $40,760 Toyota Tundra pickup, and a $2,000 rebate on a $38,895 Buick LaCrosse sedan. Both can be combined with lease and finance rates being offered by the finance arms of the respective manufacturers.

As usual, Deals of the Week obtained pricing information from http://www.carcostcanada.com/1/en/, among other sources. Consult your dealer for all the details.
