Toyota’s Tundra is but a blip on the radar screen in the war being waged among full-size pickups in Canada. Toyota Canada will sell between 6,000 and 7,000 Tundras this year, while Ford of Canada will likely sell more than 100,000 F-Series pickups.
The Tundra is, indeed, a blip. How small a blip? Chrysler Canada will move 70,000 or so Ram pickups, too. And GM of Canada will deliver 80,000-plus Silverados and Sierras.
Pickups in general are hot, with large pickup sales in Canada up nearly seven per cent. But not the Tundra. Last year, Tundra sales were off 10.8 per cent, and the 2011 total was 6,747 sold. Tundra sales have been in decline since at least 2008.
Meanwhile, big rigs as a group are flying off dealer lots in both Canada and the United States. Automotive News reports that IHS Automotive expects North American pickup sales to hit 2.1 million this year, up from fewer than 1.4 million in 2009.
A lot of the sales action is being driven by the rich, rich offers in play. Toyota Canada has been fairly reluctant to roll the dice with big offers. Those days are done.
Toyota is now fully in the incentive game here in Canada. The right buyer might be able to put together as much as $10,000 in discounts on a Tundra – and combine them with 0.0 per cent financing for up to 72 months, or a 0.0 per cent lease rate for up to 60 months. That’s a deal worth about 25 per cent of the listed price of a loaded Tundra Crewmax.
This being August, sweltering dog days in the car business, the showrooms are barren while vacationers frolic. Thus, there are other tidy offers to be had. But to buy a new vehicle this month means taking time away from camping, cottaging, golfing, boating or just plain loafing. Those who want to save money on a new ride, however, can do very well in pre-Labour Day deals.
Aside from the Tundra, Mitsubishi has a $2,000 cash offer on a $16,000 Lancer compact sedan. This rebate can be combined with special finance rates, too. Check with a Mitsu dealer for details.
At Volvo, you’ll find as much as $4,000 or more in cash discounts on the S60 premium sedan, and these discounts can be combined with 0.9 per cent financing for up to 60 months, or a 0.90 per cent lease rate for up to 48 months. The S60 is one of the newer designs in its segment, so it’s unusual to see such heavy discounting at this early stage in a car’s life-cycle.
Or what about a Kia Sorento crossover SUV? A front-drive version listing for less than $27,000 is on offer with a $3,500 factory-to-dealer rebate. Your local Kia dealer might be persuaded to go lower, too.
