Two familiar names stood atop the lists of the best-selling vehicles in Canada last month.
The Honda Civic continued its run—which reached 16 years in 2013—as the best-selling passenger car in the country with a 32 per cent jump from a year earlier..
The F-Series pickup truck from Ford grabbed top spot again on the light truck side of the ledger, although sales slipped about 6 per cent from January, 2013.
Some of the big winners on the car side included the Dodge Dart, whose sales doubled, and the Mazda3, which posted a 38 per cent jump.
On the truck side, the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue posted triple-digit gains.
DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., which compiles the list, cautioned that January numbers should be viewed with caution.
But the consulting firm also noted that sales of large pickup trucks fell 5 per cent last month from year-earlier levels.
“This is a critical segment for the Detroit Three who dominate the pickup truck market,” the monthly report on sales said. “Sales of pickups have been flying high for quite some time so we are watching this segment extremely closely. We will not have a full understanding of sales prospects until mid-year but the year’s shaky start may be an omen of things to come.”
