Montreal motorist busted going 240 km/h, fined $2,598, given 42 demerit points

Montreal— The Canadian Press

A lead-footed Quebec motorist was caught driving so fast – police say they clocked him at 240 kilometres an hour – that he lost nearly enough demerit points to have his licence confiscated three times over.

Police won't confirm reports that the man was a valet at a downtown Montreal hotel, and that he was taking out a guest's BMW for a joyride.

He has had his licence suspended. He has also been assessed a fine of $2,598, and been docked 42 demerit points. It only takes 15 demerits to lose your licence in Quebec.

The man could actually be back on the road again as quickly as six months from now – provided he has an otherwise clean record.

But he'll have to return to driving school and will have drastically higher fees next time he applies for a licence.

Quebec provincial police say they spotted the car about 3 a.m. while conducting a radar trap on a Montreal highway. The say the driver was caught going 240 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.

Police immediately pursued the vehicle and the driver pulled over without incident. Alcohol was not detected.

“This kind of speed is something you don't see every day,” said Sergeant Guy Lapointe of the Quebec provincial police.

Police would not confirm or deny a report that the man behind the wheel worked as a hotel valet.

Sgt. Lapointe simply replied: “The only thing that I can tell you is that there have been no reports of a theft of the vehicle that was pulled over.”
