The purchase price is, of course, just one piece of the puzzle when you’re evaluating the long-term cost of owning a vehicle. The total cost of ownership, notes the research firm Vincentric LLC, also factors in depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost, and repairs.
Plug in the numbers and out pops the total cost to own a particular car or light truck. Compile a broad and deep list across car brands, makes and models, and voila – you get a list of best and worst values.
That’s what the Bingham Farms, Mich., company has done. The result is the Best Value in Canada Awards for 2012.
“Our awards take into account all costs involved with owning a vehicle, enabling consumers to understand automotive value and measure the impact that owning a specific vehicle will have on their financial situation,” said Vincentric president David Wurster in releasing this year’s winners.
Toyota led all brands with 10 individual vehicles. Mercedes-Benz won for best value luxury brand and GMC is the best value truck brand. Five of Toyota’s winners were hybrids. Mercedes had four vehicle winners and BMW had three.
Vincentric says it used the cost-of-ownership factors to analyze more than 1,700 vehicle configurations. On top of that, each vehicle was evaluated in all 10 provinces plus the Northwest Territories. For those who want to know more, visit www.vincentric.com .

Of course the purchase price is critical for any buyer who wants a really good value. That means getting a deal. And here at the end of 2012, as the calendar years winds down, auto companies still have leftover 2012s on dealer lots. They are moving them with ever-richer offers.
Mercedes-Benz Canada, for instance, has up to $3,100 in cash rebates on the table for a 2012 E350 coupe customer, though this is a tricky one to negotiate. The $2,500 Clearout Credit is really worth only $1,700 because the factory has in place an $850 dealer participation fee. Deals of the Week suggests the buyer here should ask the dealer to eat that fee in the form of a dealer discount. Plus a bit more in this case. And the rebates here can be combined with factory financing of 2.90 per cent financing for up to five years.
VW seems plenty anxious to move 2012 Tiguan crossovers. In addition to a $3,000 in a factory-to-dealer rebate, loyal VW customers are eligible for another $1,000 in the form of a factory-to-customer bonus.
At Lexus, the high-performance 2012 IS F sedan ($69,950) is wearing a $5,000 factory rebate on cash purchases only. And the Infiniti M35h hybrid, a hot-shoe gasoline-electric luxury sedan, is in play with $5,750 in stackable and non-stackable Merchandising Dollars to sweeten the deal.
