Deals of the week: Family hauler that starts under $20,000 Add to ...

Ford of Canada president David Mondragon expects to sell something in the neighborhood of 40,000 Escape compact sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) this year and it’s not hard to see why.

The Escape, a very competent little station wagon-like rig, starts at less than $20,000, and with an Employee Pricing rebate tacked on, the final price is just a bit north of $19,000 plus taxes and fees.

The Escape deal is one of the better ones out there at a time when many car makers appear to be pulling back a little from the rich offers be thrown about last month, during the so-called Dog Days of August.

That’s not to say you can’t find rich incentives to sweeten the deal. Take the Ram pickup. It has a whopping $10,000 incentive in play, demonstrating that the pickup pricing wars that have been raging for a year or so continue. How much longer will car companies continue to discount pickups? Common sense says those days are numbered.

This time around Deals of the Week also wants to put a spotlight on incentives that could be worth more than $5,000 on a $28,000 Chevrolet Camaro coupe. And for the right buyers, Land Rover may have as much as $8,000 in play on the LR4 ($59,990 not including the $2,000 Green Levy).

As usual, Deals of the Week obtained pricing information from www.carcostcanada.com. Here are the numbers.

2011 Ford Escape
“Talk about a model that’s a little long in the tooth, but then you can get one for under $20,000 and that’s good value,” says Timoteo. “This is not a bad utilitarian sort of vehicle. They ironed out the bugs 10 years ago.” Indeed, Ford is months away from launching a new version of the Escape, one based on the European Kuga/Focus platform. But there is nothing “wrong” with the current Escape given its affordable pricing. For August, the Employee Pricing discount is in play, making the list price of the least-expensive Escape just a hair over $19,000.
