Deals of the Week

Deals of the week: Elantra, Escape, Sorento, Impreza

Globe and Mail Update

The Hyundai Elantra sedan was the best-selling passenger car in Canada last month, and with only minimal discounting. Pretty impressive.

Hyundai sold 2,253 Elantras in January, an increase of 209 per cent over the same month in 2010. Hyundai Canada says the Elantra out-sold the Honda Civic almost 2 to 1: 2,253 to 1,142 Civics in January.

Hyundai, of course, has an all-new Elantra in showrooms for 2011. At launch, Hyundai Canada did not change the price for the 2011 model, even though the new model is considerably improved over the old version. More car for the same money also represents a deal, correct?

The 2011 Elantra sedan starts at $15,849 and is equipped with a standard 148-horsepower engine, six-speed transmission, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock and six airbags.

Hyundai plans a big marketing push for the Elantra this month, starting with the Super Bowl. Hyundai was the exclusive automotive sponsor for the first quarter of the Super Bowl on Canadian television networks.

“Our Elantra spots are a fun way to help consumers realize they don’t have to compromise when they shop the compact sedan segment,” says Hyundai Canada president Steve Kelleher, saying the four 30-second spots will be amusing, as is Super Bowl custom.

There may not be big money on the Elantra, but it’s still something of a deal. There is big money on the Ford Escape SUV, however. We have the details here in Deals of the Week. And we take a look at two others.
