Ferrari will build one final LaFerrari and auction it off to with the proceeds going to help victims of the earthquake that devastated central Italy on August 24.

Ferrari chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne made the announcement Wednesday.

At $1.7-million, the LaFerrari is the most expensive car and highest-performing street car ever made by the Italian car maker. It is a 963-horsepower hybrid hypercar that Ferrari initially limited to 499 examples, but now the company has decided to make a 500th example.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Amatrice, a town about 100 kilometres northeast of Rome, killing at least 290 people and leaving thousands homeless in the surrounding area.

It is not clear when the car will be finished or where it will be sold, but there is little doubt Ferrari will be able to sell the car at a premium. In December of 2013, Ferrari unveiled the car on U.S. television, the company announced that the 120 models earmarked for the United States had been pre-sold.
