In recent weeks, we have covered the rapid growth in sales of SUVs and crossovers. However, much of this growth has come at the expense of minivans, which experienced a greater than 5 per cent decline in sales in 2015 and a nearly 18 per cent decline so far in 2016 as compared to the same period last year.
The highly anticipated 2017 Chrysler Pacifica unveiled earlier this year at the Detroit auto show will soon replace the Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan (which is by far the best-selling minivan in Canada). The new Pacifica features sleeker lines than would be expected from the typically boxy-mold of many minivans. It will also be the first minivan available in a plug-in hybrid version.

This may be the beginning of a renewed era of competition in the segment as many current minivan offerings from auto makers are nearing the end of their design cycles. In the meantime, there are significant deals on current generation minivan models.
2016 Mazda 5
Cash purchasers and finance customers can take advantage of a $3,000 rebate on the 2016 Mazda 5. Financing for up to 84 months is available at 4.25 per cent and leasing for up to 48 months is available at 5.5 per cent.

Cash purchasers can take advantage of a $2,500 after-tax rebate on the 2016 Odyssey (compared to zero in February). Financing for up to 60 months and leasing for up to 48 months are both available at 0.99 per cent (compared to 1.99 per cent in February).

Cash purchasers and finance customers can take advantage of a $7,000 before-tax manufacturer incentive on the 2016 Grand Caravan as well as a $1,500 after-tax rebate. Vehicles equipped with an optional DVD entertainment system also qualify for an upsized $2,500 after-tax “DVD Bonus Cash” rebate instead of $1,500 for base models. Financing for up to 72 months is available at zero per cent interest.
