Movie fans around the globe waited with eager anticipation for last weekend's big awards show. And when the dust had settled, it was The Last Airbender that came away the big winner - the big loser, actually - snaring five awards, including worst picture at the 31st annual Razzie awards in which the Worst Achievements in Film were celebrated.
Car movies have not been immune to the sting of the Golden Raspberry. In fact, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a triple loser a year ago, taking home the "prizes" for worst picture, worst director and worst screenplay.
But Transformers is not the only bad car movie ever made. No, Hollywood is a veritable junkyard of broken down, bad car flicks. The envelope please. And the losers are ...
1.Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Ashton Kutcher, Seann William Scott
It's a given that any movie starring master thespian, Twittering twit and 2011 Razzie award winner (worst actor for both Killers and Valentine's Day) Ashton Kutcher is at a distinct disadvantage right from the get-go. But what's truly galling is that the subject of the movie, a Renault Le Car junker, doesn't even make an appearance until the 75th minute. This movie tries to be stupid funny, but it's just stupid. Dude, where's the 83 minutes I lost watching this dreck?
Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper
Yeah, yeah, I know. It was a big box-office hit and Hopper is compelling as crazed bomber Howard Payne. Otherwise, the always wooden Reeves and the altogether-too-sassy Bullock make me want to throw them under the runaway bus.
John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John
It's a classic car lover's dream movie: Greased Lightning, a souped up 1948 Ford convertible, leads a parade of vintage beauties that include a 1949 Mercury Custom, a Studebaker Commander and a 1949 Dodge Wayfarer Convertible. But it's all ruined by John Travolta and the world's oldest teenagers belting out detestably catchy songs while dancing atop these macho machines.
Sylvester Stallone, Burt Reynolds
Stallone plays a down-and-out washed-up champion who makes a comeback to prove himself a hero. Sound familiar? But Rocky this ain't. No, this Rocky on wheels just spins its Grand Prix wheels and goes nowhere fast.
5.Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)
Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly
NASCAR. Southerners. Rednecks. The French. All the politically incorrect stereotypes are played to the hilt for cheap laughs and while there are some funny bits in Talladega Nights, this vehicle runs out of gas long before the checkered flag.
Speed Racer (2008); Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci
Days of Thunder (1990); Tom Cruise
Redline (2007); Nathan Phillips, Nadia Bjorlin
Convoy (1978); Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw
Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005); Lindsay Lohan, Justin Long
