Timmins has topped Toronto, taking the top two spots in the Canadian Automobile Association's annual list of the worst roads in Ontario.

Toronto's Dufferin Street, first place – or should that be worst place? – for the past three years, dropped to third. Last year, seven of the 10 worst roads were in Toronto; this year, only two. Dufferin Street has made the list nine times.

"This year's top two roads, Algonquin Boulevard West and East, received the highest number of votes in the history of the campaign," said Christina Hlusko, president and CEO of CAA North and East Ontario in a press release. "In many cases, the northern connecting link of which these roads are a part is the major link to neighbouring communities, making them frequently used by the vast majority of residents.

"With this year's results, the residents of Timmins are sending a clear message that these roads need attention."

A third Timmins street, Riverside Drive, also made the Top 10 – finishing eighth.

"Hopefully with the three sections of the connecting link in Timmins and Highway 144 in Sudbury making the list, the province will realize that they are coming up short for northern Ontario in terms of funding for infrastructure," said Timmins Mayor Steven Black. " We are ready to be part of the solution but need the province to commit their share of the funding."

The goal, says the CAA of its campaign, is to "raise awareness of the need for repaired and improved roads in our communities." More than 2,000 Ontario roads were nominated.
