car review

Here's a valuable lesson in deal-making and it comes out of this year's Toronto auto show: only last month – before Acura Canada rolled out the TLX "prototype" this week – buyers were looking at a $3,000 factory incentive on the Acura TL. Now it's up to $5,000.

The TLX, of course, is the thinly disguised production version of the car which this summer will replace both the TL and the TSX in Acura's lineup. Summer isn't really so far away, so to keep the aging metal moving, Acura is sweetening the deal.

Let's face it: the TL isn't the most modern design on the lot, but with all-wheel drive and plenty of features, this premium sedan is a car with merit. It's just not a new design. Speaking of which, the sheetmetal on the TL is pretty "out there," but for some that's surely okay.

If you're interested, note that $2,000 of that $5,000 offer is available with 2.90 per cent financing for up to 60 months. Add in, say, $2,000 in a dealer discount, and a $44,000 car can be had for up to $7,000 below sticker for cash buyers and $4,000-plus if one finances.

We found a similar story with the 2014 Audi A4. Like the TL, the A4 with quattro is an appealing automobile. Newly renovated? No, not like the current BMW 3-Series or the upcoming and all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class. But a good car, nonetheless and on offer with a $3,000 factory incentive.

Visitors to the Toronto auto show will also get their first look at the new Chrysler 200, which will roll into showrooms later this year. That means the current one, along with its corporate sibling, the Dodge Avenger, will soon be replaced.

Not surprisingly, even the sexiest versions of the 200 and Avenger are being discounted. The Avenger R/T, for instance, has a $2,600 factory deal available, and it can be combined with $700 or more in a dealer discount for the sharp negotiator.

And then there's the Ford Edge, also in the Toronto auto show news now that Ford Motor has said it will go ahead with an investment plan to build the next-generation Edge in Oakville, Ont. – preserving some 2,600 jobs. The current Edge has been tweaked and has a modern feel to it, but it's also being pushed with a $2,000 factory offer – and another $2,000 is play at the dealer.

The shiny new models at the Toronto show, then, are a sign of deals to be had, not just excitement in the making.
