In the next few days, we'll introduce the new Globe Investor. For the first time at The Globe and Mail, what you'll see is a beta version of the site. What does that mean? Here's the how and why of the beta launch, and what you can expect.

First, beta means the site isn't finished. There are parts that we've tried to really nail down so that you understand where we're headed. We are proud of them and hope they show you where we are going as we rebuild the site. There are other parts that haven't been completed yet. Why on earth would we do that? Well, it's standard operating procedure for some of our competitors and we see it as a pretty smart way of doing things on the web. This is our first try at it.

Normally, we at the Globe beaver away at a new website for weeks or months. We test it, and test it, and test it again on focus groups and friends and family, and then cross our fingers before sending it out into the world. We've never entirely sure how much you will like it and we don't always get everything right. We're human.

This time around, the beta version gives us a chance to show the new site to the best focus group of all: you. It allows us to find out what you think, listen to your feedback, make changes and then use that feedback to build the rest of the site. Meanwhile, the original globeinvestor.com is still fully functional and running in parallel so that you don't miss a thing.

So the feedback is important. Crucial. We want to hear from everyone. Hammer away at us. If you think the Globe and Mail surely "can do better" on a particular feature, as a reader said in the comments of the first posting of the blog, we can take it. We probably even agree with you. What we really want to do is get it right.
