Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund CGX.UN-T smashed through its previous box office record in the third quarter of 2009, reporting revenue of $155.9-million on a series of blockbusters.

“While the third quarter of 2008 featured the strong performance of The Dark Knight, which finished as the second-highest grossing film of all time in North America [Titanic is No. 1], the third quarter of 2009 benefited from film product catering to a wider range of film audiences, and the success of the premium priced 3D and IMAX product,” Cineplex said.

Profit increased to $20.4-million, up from $18.4-million a year earlier, “in spite of challenging economic conditions in Canada during this time frame.”

Here's what played well on the silver screen in the third quarter:

Pass the popcorn: Concession revenue hits new high

Concession revenues were up 9.1 per cent, to $77.99-million, from the year-ago period, primarily because of a 4.4-per-cent increase in attendance and 4.5-per-cent increase in average concession revenue per patron.

The $4.15 in average concession revenue per patron is the highest ever, up 6 cents from the second quarter of 2009.

This was due, in part to the slate of movies, with three of the quarter’s top five “catering to the family demographic, who tend to be higher concession spenders,” Cineplex said.
