North American stocks were relatively unchanged soon after the start of trading on Tuesday, with most international markets closed for the May Day holiday.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 21 points or 0.2 per cent, to 13,192. The broader S&P 500 fell 1 point or 0.1 per cent, to 1397. In Canada, the S&P/TSX composite index rose 14 points or 0.1 per cent, to 12,306.

Pfizer Inc. fell 0.6 per cent after reporting that its first quarter earnings fell 19 per cent from last year. Caterpillar Inc. fell 0.9 per cent and Boeing Co. fell 0.8 per cent.

However, Sears Holdings Corp. surged 11.6 per cent after announcing an upbeat first-quarter earnings outlook, seeing a profit between $155-million (U.S.) and $195-million.

Among Canadian stocks, Research In Motion Ltd. fell 2.9 per cent after it unveiled the new BlackBerry 10 platform at a company event in Florida. Talisman Energy Inc. fell 2.1 per cent after reporting a quarterly profit of $291-million and announcing asset sales to help bolster its balance sheet.
