U.S. stock market indexes had been sitting on sizable gains on Tuesday afternoon, when a hacked Associated Press Twitter feed erroneously distributed a news item saying that two explosions had rocked the White House.

Shortly after 1 p.m. (ET), the Dow Jones industrial average plunged about 150 points within seconds. It rebounded just as fast. The broader S&P 500 made a similar move.
