Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. has passed Nokia Corp. as the world’s No. 1 cellphone maker, in terms of the number of units shipped in the first quarter of 2012. According to figures from IHS iSuppli (via AllThingsD), Samsung shipped 92 million phones, versus 83 million for Nokia. And when it comes to smart phones, Apple Inc. is on top, with 35 million iPhones shipped. Samsung places second in this category.
Clearly, Samsung and Apple have emerged as the two big winners in this market, and their respective share prices reflect their success. Over the past 12 months, Apple shares have surged 72.4 per cent and Samsung’s have risen nearly 50 per cent.
Meanwhile, other companies are struggling, and that too is being reflected in their share prices. Nokia is down more than 57 per cent over the past year, LG Electronics Inc. is down nearly 30 per cent and Research In Motion Ltd. is down a head-spinning 74.6 per cent.
