Stikeman Elliott top equity advisor: Bloomberg

Globe and Mail Blog Post

There’s no debate over which law firm the investment dealers turned to first over the past year.
Stikeman Elliott ranked as the No. 1 as legal advisor to brokerage houses doing stock offerings last year, with more than twice the market share of its nearest rival, according to league tables compiled by Bloomberg Financial.
The partnership worked for the dealers on $4.9-billion worth of equity financings. The corporate lawyers signed off on 43 deals, or one of every five underwritings done in 2007.
The No 2 player in this specialty, according to Bloomberg, was McCarthy Tetrault, which advised bankers on $2.0-billion of equity financings, and 29 deals. Osler Hoskin & Harcourt ranked third, with roles in 19 deals that raised $1.9-billion.
Stikeman Elliott was also the busiest legal advisor to companies selling stock, with Bloomberg showing that the law firm acted for issuers who raised $2.9-billion in 25 stock sales.
Calgary-based Burnet Duckworth & Palmer ranked second, advising issuers on $2.3-billion of equity sales, while McCarthy Tetrault was third with a role in $1.8-billion of offerings.
