CIBC retools mining team, hiring Gratias

Globe and Mail Blog

CIBC CM-T is retooling its mining investment banking team, hiring a senior Morgan Stanley banker as co-head.

The bank hired Chris Gratias as co-head of global mining. Mr. Gratias, who was global head of precious metals mining for Morgan, follows Mark Horsfall, another former Morgan Stanley banker that CIBC grabbed to run energy banking.

Matthew Quinlan, a CIBC veteran, will be the other co-head of mining.

They replace Rick McCreary, who left CIBC to join Barrick Gold as chief acquisition hunter.

CIBC also named Thys Terblanche head of international mining and sydney-based Neil Johnson vice chair of global mining investment banking.
