Globalive, operator of the Wind mobile telephone service in Canada, has said it wants to be a consolidator.
Now Bloomberg News is reporting that the company is in talks to buy rival startup wireless service Mobilicity.
Canada has a number of upstart wireless services that are challenging incumbents such as BCE Inc. BCE-T and Telus Corp. T-T . New phone shops have popped up on many corners and there's fierce competition on price at the discount end of the market.
Consolidation in the sector is the next logical step as the upstarts are struggling to achieve the scale they need to compete. Wind is lagging the pace it needs to meet customer targets, and Mobilicity would vault it higher, according to Bloomberg.
Before Mobilicity, Wind tried talking to another upstart, Public Mobile, about a deal, according to Bloomberg.
