Just Energy Income Fund is acquiring privately held U.S. energy marketing firm Hudson Energy Corp. for $304.2-million.

The deal is set to close around May 7, the companies announced Monday.

Hudson Energy sells electricity and natural gas to customers in New York, New Jersey, Texas and Illinois.

"This is an exciting acquisition which will be key to the continued growth of Just Energy," Rebecca MacDonald, executive chairman of Just Energy, said in a statement.

"Hudson is a leader in sales to small and mid-size commercial customers who make up a significant portion of our target market. Adding Hudson's key people and their skill sets will vastly improve the commercial segment of our business."

Just Energy sells natural gas and electricity to residential and commercial customers under long-term fixed-price and price-protected contracts. It also offers renewable energy options to its customers.

Its units were halted on the TSX pending news from the company.
