CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: ATCO Gas Reminds Albertans to Call Before You Dig13:28 EDT Thursday, May 27, 2010EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 27, 2010) - The following corrects and replaces the release sent on May 21, 2010 at 7:00 ET. The phone number to "call before you dig" has changed from 1.800.242.3477 to 1.800.242.3447. The complete and corrected version follows.Spring is here and so is the risk of hitting a natural gas line. ATCO Gas is working to prevent that. With homeowners and contractors eager to break ground, ATCO Gas is reminding people to plan ahead and call Alberta One-Call, a free service, at 1.800.242.3447. Calls should be made a minimum 48 hours before digging begins. It's the best way to avoid hitting a natural gas line."Safety is paramount at ATCO Gas," said Brian Hahn, President, ATCO Gas. "Our goal is to eliminate gas line hits because anytime a line is hit, there's the potential for tragedy."Last year, 685 natural gas lines were ruptured or severed in the ATCO Gas service area. In almost half of those incidents, homeowners or contractors did not contact Alberta One-Call to locate the lines.Locating underground utilities prior to excavation is an important first step. Knowing how to properly expose the marked gas lines is also critical, especially when digging within one metre. To expose the gas line, use the markings as a guide, keep the shovel at a shallow angle and carefully remove small layers of soil until the gas line is uncovered. For more details on how to stay safe while digging, please visit www.atcogas.com.ATCO Gas distributes natural gas through a network of more than 37,000 kilometres of underground pipes and service lines.
