Guidance Software Secures Search Patent from U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
Tuesday, November 02, 2010
PASADENA, Calif. (Business Wire) -- Guidance Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:GUID) today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded the company with Patent no. 7,711,728 for its unique system and method for optimized distributed search in computer investigations.
Guidance Software filed the patent, called “System and Method for Searching Static Data in a Computer Investigation Systems,” on December 21, 2005. The patent pertains to EnCase® Enterprise and all EnCase Enterprise-based products including, EnCase eDiscovery and EnCase Cybersecurity. The patent applies specifically to the system and method that Guidance Software uses to help organizations quickly and efficiently search for data within the corporate universe.
The patented system enables Guidance Software to search live data remotely, from the original sources, from multiple machines at the same time – delivering accurate, actionable results for e-discovery, forensics and other computer investigations. Unlike other vendors that must first index the data before it is searchable, Guidance Software makes the need for pre-indexing obsolete. This optimized distributed search method is not only faster, but much more accurate than indexing (which can take weeks or more to complete). This patented system searches for only necessary files, which allows the system to scale for large investigations.
“One of the reasons we selected Guidance Software EnCase eDiscovery was the fact that we could search for data within our corporation faster, efficiently and more accurately than other software solutions,” said Susan Jackson, staff counsel for Novelis Corporation. “The patent awarded to Guidance Software for its process for optimized search reaffirms the company's technology leadership.”
“Data search within corporate networks for computer investigations is one of the biggest issues facing IT and legal teams as they try and cull through the massive amounts of data in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner,” said Shawn McCreight, Guidance Software chairman and chief technology officer. “This issue cuts across e-discovery, forensic and cybersecurity investigations and can mean the difference between winning or losing in a litigation scenario, unearthing court-mandated evidence or auditing workstations and servers for security and compliance. Our patented system delivers the most optimized, targeted data search capabilities without pre-indexing, and provides organizations with the real-time data search results they need.”
