SunTrust Names Bill Peele President and CEO of Mecklenburg/South Carolina Region14:30 EDT Thursday, March 24, 2011ATLANTA and CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 24, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SunTrust Banks, Inc. (NYSE: STI) has named William H. Peele President and Chief Executive Officer of SunTrust Bank, Mecklenburg/South Carolina Region.  He succeeds Carl E. Wicker, Jr. who will retire as previously announced on March 31, 2011.  Mr. Peele will report to Gary Peacock, SunTrust Banks, Inc., Central Division President and Chief Executive Officer, and be based in Charlotte. "Bill brings more than 20 years of retail and commercial line of business experience -- and a reputation for effective leadership inside and outside of the bank -- to his new role," said Mr. Peacock.  "There is significant opportunity to continue growing SunTrust's market share in the Mecklenburg/South Carolina region and Bill has a track record of doing just that."  He continued, "We appreciate Carl's service to the company and his commitment to our clients.  We wish him well in retirement."   Mr. Peele most recently has served as Commercial Line of Business Manager for the SunTrust's Atlanta Region, following Retail Line of Business leadership roles in Atlanta and Tampa.  Prior to joining SunTrust in 2002, he served as Retail Group Executive for West Florida and Retail District and Area Manager for Huntington National Bank, and in a variety of retail, business banking and commercial banking roles with Barnett Bank.A graduate of the University of Alabama, Mr. Peele is a member of the Board of Directors of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, served as Vice Chair of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce membership drive and led SunTrust's 2009 and 2010 United Way campaigns in metro Atlanta.
