Gap Inc. Reports May Sales08:00 EDT Thursday, June 02, 2011 SAN FRANCISCO (Business Wire) -- Gap Inc. (NYSE:GPS) today reported that May 2011 net sales increased 1 percent compared with last year. Net sales for the four-week period ended May 28, 2011 were $1.06 billion compared with net sales of $1.05 billion for the four-week period ended May 29, 2010. The company's comparable sales for May 2011, which include the associated comparable online sales, were down 4 percent compared with a 1 percent increase for May 2010. “While net sales increased in May, we recognize the need for our brands to consistently deliver at much higher levels of performance – with improved traffic and greater product acceptance – to support our long-term growth strategy,” said Glenn Murphy, chairman and chief executive officer at Gap Inc. Comparable sales for May 2011, including the associated comparable online sales, were as follows: Gap North America: negative 4 percent versus negative 2 percent last year Banana Republic North America: negative 6 percent versus positive 2 percent last year Old Navy North America: negative 1 percent versus positive 1 percent last year International: negative 9 percent versus positive 8 percent last year Year-to-date net sales were $4.36 billion for the 17 weeks ended May 28, 2011, a decrease of 1 percent compared with net sales of $4.38 billion for the 17 weeks ended May 29, 2010. The company's year-to-date comparable sales, including associated online sales, decreased 3 percent compared with a 4 percent increase last year.
