Silicon-Based Materials from XIAMETER® Brand from Dow Corning Help Make Kitchens Fun, Safe and Convenient
Wednesday, September 28, 2011
MIDLAND, Mich. (Business Wire) -- The current global economic conditions and rising food prices have spurred many consumers to spend more time in their own kitchens where silicon-based materials are helping make home-cooking easier, safer, and more convenient.
A survey by the National Grocers Association and SupermarketGuru found that 89 percent of U.S. consumers now eat most of their meals at home, and 33 percent dine out less than once a month. Homeowners' focus on their kitchens has translated into an average of $27,300 spent on kitchen remodels in 2009, despite the economic downturn, according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies.
“Silicones and other silicon-based materials play many roles in the modern kitchen,” said Justin Jorgensen, global marketing manager for Dow Corning's XIAMETER® brand, which offers high-quality, standard silicones online. “More families are discovering how the unique benefits of silicon-based materials can make food preparation, cooking and clean-up easier.”
Silicones are the preferred choice for a range of uses in today's kitchen thanks to their heat stability, durability, and flexibility. For example, silicone rubber is used in heat-resistant tools such as spatulas, potholders, and flexible bakeware. The advantages of silicone rubber are numerous: silicone rubber bakeware does not need to be greased or floured; silicone containers can go directly from the freezer to the oven without cracking; silicone spatulas can stand up to high temperatures without melting; and silicone oven mitts and potholders can help keep you from getting burned. Not only are silicone kitchenwares heat resistant, flexible, durable, and easy to clean, but they also come in a wide variety of fun colors, shapes and sizes.
The benefits of silicones in kitchenware are not only limited to consumers. Silicone rubbers have a lot to offer manufacturers as well, ranging from excellent processability and translucency to performance over a wide temperature range, as well as the ability to hold a pigment or color, and to accept extending fillers.
Going beyond the world of silicone rubber kitchenware, silicon-based materials can be found throughout the modern kitchen. A few examples of silicon-based materials in the kitchen include silicon semiconductors used within the computer chips that control high-tech appliances, silicone sealants used around countertops, and silicone wire coatings used within many appliances.
“The benefits of the silicon element are virtually everywhere around you when you're in your kitchen,” said Jorgensen. “And given today's fast-paced and time-crunched lifestyles, every little bit helps when it comes to making the time we spend in our kitchens easier, safer, and more fun.”
