Argentina's Cablevision Selects Alcatel-Lucent's 100 Gigabit Optical Solution to Cope With Booming Data Demand and Rising Transport Costs09:00 EST Tuesday, December 13, 2011First cable operator in South America to deploy a 100 gigabit per second optical network to boost multicast video services and high-speed Internet accessBUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Dec. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cablevision Argentina, one of the Latin America's largest cable TV and Internet services providers, will be the first cable operator in South America to deploy an advanced optical networking solution to deliver services at 100 gigabits per second (100G) speeds. Cablevision Argentina has selected Alcatel-Lucent's next-generation 100G optical coherent networking solution to dramatically increase performance and service speeds to meet the growing demand for video, multimedia and Internet applications from its customer base. Cablevision has more than three million CATV customers and more than one million Internet users in Argentina, and offers the service of Cablevision Digital HD. With the growth of subscribers and traffic quickly exhausting the company's fiber capacity, the operator was looking for a solution to manage increasing traffic while reducing the complexity and cost of providing high quality services. "With Alcatel-Lucent's solution, we are taking a major step towards providing a highly flexible, future-proof network, scaling up to 100G, to support current and future bandwidth demands with increased efficiencies and reduced time-to-market for new services," said Gabriel Carro, head of Engineering for Cablevision Argentina.Alcatel-Lucent is supplying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) featuring next-generation 100G coherent technology to dramatically improve capacity scalability. This is the first 100G-capable cable TV network deployed in South America. Beyond expanding network capacity, the solution will help Cablevision reduce operating and maintenance costs and lower power consumption. Designed to address the booming bandwidth demands driven by video streaming, web applications, file sharing and high definition movies, next-generation 100G coherent technology is the compelling next step in optical networking, offering unprecedented resilience to optical transmission impairments across the network."Cablevision continues to lead the Argentinean cable TV market with the rapid expansion of its offerings, including new high definition channels and the highest Internet speed commercially available. Our 100G solution offers unprecedented capacity, bandwidth scalability, and the lowest cost-per-bit for optimized total cost of ownership," said Osvaldo Di Campli, president of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in the Caribbean & Latin America region. Alcatel-Lucent's 100G offering is part of its Converged Backbone Transformation solution, a key component of Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network?, an architecture designed to assist operators in transforming their networks to deliver advanced, revenue-generating services in a highly scalable and easy to maintain solution.About Alcatel-Lucent's High Leverage Network? The Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network? (HLN) architecture addresses the dual challenges of simultaneously scaling and managing network capacity to meet increasing bandwidth demand while delivering differentiated, revenue generating services. It achieves this by delivering scalable bandwidth at the lowest cost per bit and by embedding intelligence in the network to enable dynamic service creation and delivery. The foundation for the Alcatel-Lucent Application Enablement vision, the HLN architecture collapses multiple complex costly overlay networks into a simpler, fully optimized network that leverages technical innovations and embraces existing environments.
