L&W Supply Corporation Branch in Sparks, Nev., Honored as OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Workplace15:00 EST Tuesday, February 28, 2012 CHICAGO (Business Wire) -- The L&W Supply Corporation branch in Sparks, Nev., held a ceremony today to mark having achieved the prestigious Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star designation from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). L&W Supply is North America's largest specialty dealer for drywall, ceilings, steel framing and other related building materials. It is a subsidiary of Chicago-based USG Corporation (NYSE: USG) and operates 155 branches in the United States. The Sparks branch is the second L&W Supply location to earn OSHA Star status, the highest recognition within the VPP. OSHA officials presented the award to the branch's 15 employees today. To attain the Star designation, employees, management and OSHA work together to implement safety and health programs and processes that go beyond OSHA regulations to further protect employees and promote safe operations. Fewer than 2,500 worksites of the more than 8 million in the United States have received the Star award. The Sparks branch opened in 1985. It supplies construction materials to builders, contractors and other customers in northern Nevada. Like all L&W branches, it specializes in delivering the materials and then stocking them throughout the job site. Despite the potential hazards posed by this process, the Sparks employees have established an exceptional safety record. They have worked more than 5,000 consecutive days or nearly 14 years, without a lost-time injury. In addition, they have had no restricted-duty injuries in four years. “The Sparks employees have worked hard to earn the OSHA Star,” said Brendan Deely, president and chief executive officer, L&W Supply, and executive vice president, USG Corporation. “They have done a superior job in upholding our company's core value of safety.” The Sparks employees completed a rigorous application process to qualify for the Star designation, which included implementing new procedures and documentation as well as upgrading the warehouse structure. “Everyone at the Sparks branch played a role in this accomplishment,” said Ryan Long, branch manager, L&W Supply, Sparks. “We are proud to join the elite group of VPP Star workplaces.” L&W Supply and USG are industry leaders in safety. Ten USG manufacturing locations and two L&W Supply branches, including Sparks, are OSHA Star worksites. Nearly 90 percent of L&W Supply's branches have worked 1,000 consecutive days or more without a lost-time injury, and two branches have worked more than 10,000 days without a lost-time injury. USG is a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-performance building systems through its subsidiaries, which include United States Gypsum Company, USG Interiors, LLC, and L&W Supply. Headquartered in Chicago, USG's worldwide operations serve the residential and non-residential construction markets, repair and remodel construction markets, and industrial processes.
