Power lines are part of the rural landscape, and ATCO Electric wants to work with farmers to ensure they have enough clearance to move their tall farm equipment safely."Contact with a power line is 100 per cent preventable," said Bobbi Lambright, President, Operations Division, ATCO Electric. "Now is the time to call ATCO Electric so that we can work with our farm customers to plan the safest route around power lines."ATCO Electric will determine power line heights in farmyards, fields and on nearby roads - anywhere farmers might travel with equipment that may be taller than power lines. Where required, lines will be lifted to allow the equipment to pass safely under them.ATCO Electric offers a safety incentive program of up to four hours free labour per move for qualified farm customers, including the Rural Electrification Associations it operates. Customers are asked to call ATCO Electric at least two business days before they plan to move their equipment.Contact with a power line can be fatal. There have been five fatalities in Alberta over the last two years due to farm equipment contact with overhead power lines. In 2011, ATCO Electric recorded 60 incidents of farm equipment contact with power lines and poles.
