Barnes & Noble Announces National “Teacher of the Year” Winner in Its Second Annual “My Favorite Teacher Contest”

Barnes & Noble Announces National “Teacher of the Year” Winner in Its Second Annual “My Favorite Teacher Contest”08:30 EDT Wednesday, May 02, 2012 NEW YORK (Business Wire) -- Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, today announced that Stanley Koba from Howell High School in Farmingdale, NJ, has been named the national winner and “Teacher of the Year” in the “Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest.” Mr. Koba was chosen from more than 14,000 entries at Barnes & Noble stores nationwide. Mr. Koba was nominated by his student Abigail Thompson. Students were invited to nominate their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that share how their teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire their teacher. Entries were accepted at Barnes & Noble stores. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher's qualities, the sincerity of the student's appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. “We are thrilled to recognize educators and their tremendous contributions to our communities with the Teacher of the Year award for the second year in a row,” said Sarah DiFrancesco, director of business development. “This award celebrates teachers' dedication to their students and their ability to inspire. We're pleased to present this award to Stanley Koba who truly embodies these qualities as beautifully described in the essay we received from Abigail Thompson.” Along with the title of “Teacher of the Year,” Mr. Koba will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a special community celebration at his local Barnes & Noble store. Mr. Koba's school will also receive $5,000 as well. He will also receive five copies of the winning essay published in hardcover by Tikatok.com, the website where students create and publish their own books, and a $250 Tikatok Gift Card, which will allow him to publish stories written by students in his class. The Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher program provides students with the opportunity to tell their communities how much they appreciate their teachers. Teachers from Grades 1 - 12 were eligible for nomination. Awards for local and regional winners included prizes for the teachers, NOOK® Readers and more. Only students enrolled in Grades 1 - 12 and teachers employed in elementary, middle or high schools in the United States are eligible to win.
