Molson Coors opens doors of Moncton brewery in effort to reduce hunger and donates $13,703 to Food DEPOT Alimentaire11:51 EDT Tuesday, May 15, 2012MONCTON, May 15, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - For the first time since its opening in 2007, Molson Coors opened the doors of the Moncton brewery Friday May 11th with a view to raising public awareness of the solvable issue of hunger in Canada.Molson Coors organized this initiative in cooperation with Food DEPOT Alimentaire within the scope of Hunger Awareness Week which took place May 7 to 11, 2012. For a mere $5, Molson Coors and its employees offered the unique opportunity of touring the Moncton brewery located at 170 MacNaughton Avenue in Moncton Caledonia Industrial Park. The event included an outdoor barbecue with refreshments, an autograph session with the Moncton Wildcats hockey team and a host of other surprises.Hunger Awareness Week aimed to profile food banks as well as Canadians who receive assistance from these organizations. In 2011, nearly 900 000 persons relied each month on food banks for assistance in Canada. In Moncton, over the past year, Food DEPOT Alimentaire has distributed more than 1 million kilograms of food to area food banks and community kitchens. As Brad Devarennes, Director, Regional Sales for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island with Molson Coors stated, "For a number of New Brunswickers and Canadians everywhere in the country, hunger is a major daily issue. Molson is proud to partner with Food DEPOT Alimentaire to help the less privileged inhabitants of our region Our employees firmly believe in the importance of contributing to the community well-being and this exclusive tour of the Moncton brewery was for us a way to tangibly support our mission in this regard."To celebrate this successful day, Molson Coors donated $13,703 to Food DEPOT Alimentaire. The initiative organized by Molson Coors in Moncton attracted a total of more than 300 participants.About Hunger Awareness Week Hunger Awareness Week was created with a view to enabling food banks to raise public awareness of the reality of hunger in Canada and encouraging all Canadians to come to the aid of those in need. Nearly 900 000 persons rely upon food banks for assistance each month and nearly two million Canadians live with food insecurity, not knowing when they will sit down for their next meal. Today, more than 900 food banks and 2900 affiliated organizations distribute food and serve meals to Canadians in need. Since 2006, Food Banks Canada has devoted one day a year to raising awareness of the hunger issue in Canada. The event will span a full week for the first time this year.  For more information on Hunger Awareness Week, visit their website at Food DEPOT AlimentaireFood DEPOT Alimentaire is a registered non profit charity organization which distributes food to more than 20 food banks, community kitchens and agencies throughout southeastern New Brunswick. The organization operates ultramodern warehouse and distribution facilities which comprise a freezer and refrigeration zone measuring some 1080 square metres (12 000 square feet) in area.
