Travelers Celebrates 60th Anniversary of the Travelers Championship07:28 EDT Sunday, June 17, 2012 HARTFORD, Conn. (Business Wire) -- Travelers is pleased to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Travelers Championship, which tees off with opening ceremonies on June 18 at 9:00 a.m. EDT at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. A spectacular field of some of the world's top PGA TOUR professionals headlines the tournament including defending champion Fredrik Jacobson, Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington, Ryo Ishikawa and many others. The week includes great golf and entertainment for the entire family with 100 percent of net proceeds donated to more than 100 charities in the Northeast region including The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a summer camp for children coping with cancer, sickle cell anemia and other serious illnesses. The tournament has generated $29 million dollars for charity since its inception and will surpass the $30 million dollar mark with this year's event. “At Travelers, we are pleased to support such a tremendous event that supports the local community and more than 100 charities across the region,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for Travelers. “Since becoming title sponsor, we've worked hard to create a world-class PGA TOUR tournament with attractions that have broad appeal, like the Travelers Celebrity Pro-Am and Women's Day, in an effort to make this a must see event that generates significant dollars for charity.” In addition to the event's focus on military appreciation where the tournament offers free admission to all active, reserve and retired military service members and their dependents throughout the week, the tournament has partnered with Operation Shower to provide a baby shower for expectant military wives. Operation Shower is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide joyful baby showers for military families to ease the burden of deployment. There are many other fan-favorite events throughout the week: Tuesday's Farmington Bank Fan and Family Day, featuring the Golf Digest Hot List Tour Wednesday's Travelers Celebrity Pro-Am with stars including Michael Bolton, who will play a concert Tuesday night with proceeds benefiting The Michael Bolton Charities, Bill Murray, Javier Colon, Chris Berman, Jim Calhoun, Geno Auriemma, Booker T and others; Women's Day, featuring best-selling author Anna Quindlen and accomplished model and actress Bridget Moynahan, golf clinics and other activities for women; the Powerstation Events Concert Series featuring Javier Colon on Wednesday and KC & The Sunshine Band on Saturday. A unique experience for fans and players is the chance for PGA TOUR professionals to win $10,000 from Travelers for their favorite charity during Tuesday's practice round. To win, the pros will vie for the first hole-in-one or closest to the pin on The Umbrella at 15 ½, a 40' floating green in the shape of the iconic Travelers red umbrella logo on the pond between Holes 15 and 16, complete with pin flag and cup. Fans will also enjoy a number of activities in the SUBWAY® Fan Zone, an entertainment area in the center of the course including the Travelers Chipping Challenge, which is modeled after The Umbrella at 15 ½. There, fans will get a chance to win a prize by taking a golf shot at a smaller version of the floating red umbrella green. For every hole-in-one throughout the week, Travelers will donate $100 to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. In recognition of the official start of the 2012 Travelers Championship on June 18, the lights on Travelers Tower in Hartford will shine a bright red, which will last throughout the week. These lights will match the color of the company's famous logo, the red umbrella, which is infused throughout the branding of the tournament. The competition rounds of the Travelers Championship will be played June 21 - 24, which will be broadcast live from 3 to 6 p.m. EDT on Thursday and Friday and 1 to 2:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday and Sunday on Golf Channel and at 3 to 6 p.m. EDT on CBS on Saturday and Sunday.
