Emerson Global Data Center Exceeds Industry Efficiency Rates By 39 Percent10:00 EDT Wednesday, September 05, 2012 ST. LOUIS (Business Wire) -- In its first three years of operation, Emerson's (NYSE: EMR) Global Data Center never experienced an outage, despite multiple threats posed by Mother Nature, and generated an energy efficiency rate that is 39 percent higher than average data centers, the company announced today. The LEED Gold-certified Emerson Global Data Center, located on the company's corporate headquarters campus in St. Louis, began operating in July 2009 to help consolidate Emerson data centers globally. On the third anniversary of operation, Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson, helped analyze the capacity, availability, and efficiency of the data center, noting these highlights: Operating efficiency 39 percent greater than today's average data center. 100 percent availability, even in the face of extreme weather, including a nearby F4 tornado. 80 percent server virtualization enabling growth in capacity. “We had an F4 tornado rip the St. Louis airport apart, come within a mile of our data center, and take out a lot of power to the area,” said Jake Fritz, vice president of infrastructure and operations for Emerson. “But we didn't see one minute of downtime. This and other key efficiencies are a true testament to the processes and best practices we've designed and implemented for data center infrastructure management.” High Efficiency The 35,000-square-foot data center has been using the same best practices and technologies that Emerson Network Power recommends to customers, including the Energy Logicroadmap, which ensures efficient energy use and optimized space, power, and cooling. Following all Energy Logic recommendations enabled the data center to operate 39 percent more efficiently than the average data center. Energy Logic is also one of the reasons the Emerson Global Data Center achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Flexible Capacity “When we started out, we expected to have virtualization rates of about 70 percent,” said Fritz. “But as we've grown over time and consolidated more, we've actually exceeded 80 percent.” The highly flexible capacity of the data center is a result of designing the facility to scale three-fold. Between virtualization and increased equipment efficiency, there is enough raised floor space to handle the next three to five years of capacity and growth expectations. High Availability The Emerson Global Data Center, which meets Tier III criteria as defined by The Uptime Institute, has been always-on for the past three years. The 100 percent availability of the data center is credited to multiple layers of electrical redundancy, as well as a building designed to withstand an 8.0 earthquake. Emerson released a video to celebrate the data center's third anniversary and showcase the facility's key operating results.
