Los Angeles Small Business Owners Continue to Be Optimistic About 2013, Yet Concerns About the Economy Remain

Los Angeles Small Business Owners Continue to Be Optimistic About 2013, Yet Concerns About the Economy Remain09:00 EST Thursday, November 15, 2012 LOS ANGELES (Business Wire) -- Bank of America today released the fall 2012 Small Business Owner Report, a semi-annual study exploring the concerns, aspirations and perspectives of small business owners across the country. The survey, which includes an oversampling of small business owners across the Los Angeles market, found the majority of Los Angeles small business owners are planning on sustaining or growing their business over the next 12 months. Specifically, more than one-quarter (27 percent) plan on hiring more employees, while 59 percent expect their staffing needs will remain consistent. In addition, more than half (54 percent) of the Los Angeles small business owners surveyed anticipate that revenue will increase in 2013, while only 9 percent expect revenue to decline. However, this optimism is tempered by their views on the economy, with only 34 percent of Los Angeles small business owners confident that their local economy will improve over the next 12 months. Respondents were even less confident in the national (30 percent) and global economies (19 percent) improving in that same period. The significance of the Los Angeles local economy The study also shows that the local economy has the greatest impact on Los Angeles small business owners. Three in five (62 percent) Los Angeles small business owners cite that the majority of their customers come from the local community, compared to 29 percent who indicated that their customers come primarily from outside the local community but within the U.S. Only 2 percent indicated that the majority of their customers come from outside the U.S. Additionally, 67 percent of Los Angeles's small business owners believe that the local economy plays a significant role in their business. Comparatively, 59 percent believe the national economy plays a significant role, and only 31 percent believe the global economy is significant to their business. “The vitality of the Los Angeles economy directly depends on the success of our local small business community,” said Emily Shanks, Small Business Banker regional executive, West region at Bank of America. “As part of our ongoing commitment to small business owners, Bank of America will continue to provide locally relevant expertise to help them navigate through economic uncertainties while capitalizing on the abundant business opportunities that Los Angeles offers.” Black Friday has little impact on bottom line Los Angeles small business owners see little to no benefit from Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Eighty-five percent say that Black Friday has either a minor or no impact on their business's bottom line, and 74 percent believe Cyber Monday is overhyped and has no significance to their bottom line. Larger businesses: asset or adversary? When questioned about their relationship to larger businesses, less than one in six (15 percent) respondents views larger businesses as their biggest competitors. Seventy-eight percent indicate they have larger businesses as customers, and 32 percent say that larger businesses motivate them to become better small business owners. From a competitive perspective, Los Angeles small business owners cite a number of factors that drive customers to choose them over larger businesses, including customer service (74 percent), quality (63 percent) and reliability/trust (63 percent). Nearly one in three (32 percent) believes customers choose them because they are local. Los Angeles small business owners are well capitalized heading into 2013 Seventy-two percent of respondents believe they have enough access to capital to run their business effectively, and only 24 percent said that they applied for a business loan over the past year. Despite their optimistic views for growth in the coming year, 78 percent do not intend to apply for a business loan in 2013. Who small business owners turn to for financial guidance Only 32 percent of Los Angeles small business owners describe themselves as “very savvy” regarding financial matters. When seeking advice, they tap into a broad network of experts for help, including accountants/bookkeepers (79 percent), financial advisors (51 percent), other small business owners (50 percent) and friends/family (41 percent). “Los Angeles small business owners want guidance on how best to maximize cash flow management from someone who understands their business and their community,” said Shanks. “This is why we committed to hiring 1,000 small business bankers across the country – with more than 180 of them working in neighborhoods across Los Angeles and Southern California, so we can provide locally relevant expertise and personalized service that our clients have come to expect from their bank.” Bank of America has continued to actively lend to small businesses across the U.S. and California. Braun contacted a nationally representative sample of 1,003 small business owners in the United States with annual revenue between $100,000 and $4,999,999 and employing between 2 and 99 employees.
