Georgia Gulf Compound Division Receives EPA SmartWay® Certification11:31 EST Thursday, December 20, 2012 ATLANTA (Business Wire) -- Georgia Gulf Corporation (NYSE: GGC) today announced that its Compound division has received a significant environmental certification from the SmartWay® Transport Partnership. SmartWay Transport is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's flagship program for improving fuel efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution in the transportation supply chain industry. SmartWay partners must demonstrate that they are taking responsibility for the emissions associated with the movement of goods, are committed to sustainable business practices, and are reducing their carbon footprint. The Compound division's utilization of SmartWay-approved carriers has contributed to the lowering of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate-matter emissions, as well as increased fuel efficiency. Certified carriers meet voluntary equipment specifications that can reduce fuel consumption by 10 to 20 percent—saving as many as 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. “This is a significant achievement for Georgia Gulf and the Compound division,” said William H. Doherty, vice president – PVC Compounds. “We believe we have a responsibility to the communities we serve, and remain committed not only to maintaining our sustainable business practices but also to improving them in the years to come.” The SmartWay certification is the latest in a series of achievements that demonstrate the Compound division's commitment to environmental stewardship. During the first nine months of 2012, the company issued separate announcements about collaborative efforts with Galata, Segetis and InPro to introduce bio-based products that would allow downstream customers to meet their sustainability goals. Georgia Gulf's Compound division has additional sustainability efforts planned for 2013. Initiatives on the horizon include a transition to fuel-efficient intermodal transportation—truck and rail—and establishing a zero-idling policy at loading docks.
