World Anti-Doping Agency selects "whereabouts" app for athletes worldwide07:45 EDT Tuesday, April 02, 2013
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - April 2, 2013) - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has selected the whereabouts app for smartphones for athletes worldwide. The whereabouts app, developed in the Netherlands by Logica, now part of CGI (TSX:GIB.A)(NYSE:GIB), a leading provider of information technology and business process services, facilitates the obligation of top athletes to forwarding the details of their whereabouts to a doping authority or international federation as required, in order to be available for anti-doping tests.
As part of fulfilling its mission to lead the worldwide campaign for eliminating doping in sport, WADA manages a database to which most global athletes provide details regarding their whereabouts. CGI developed the innovative app in close cooperation with the Dutch Doping Authority, InnoSportNL and NOC*NSF due to the urgent need of such a tool for top athletes.
The whereabouts app enables top athletes to enter, check, change and submit their whereabouts details at any time with a few clicks on their smartphone. Through a reminder feature, it also helps the athletes to remember their obligation. The app is available on two platforms most commonly used: iPhone and Android.
"The App provides athletes an easy, accessible way to report their whereabouts and remain in observance of the relevant regulations, thereby demonstrating their commitment to clean sport," says David Howman, WADA's Director General. "Everyone benefits from this efficient solution, and we are pleased to offer the app."
"The whereabouts app is a successful example of CGI innovation - an interactive application that helps athletes as well as the world of sports on a global scale. From now on, over 25,000 athletes worldwide are offered the opportunity to supply their whereabouts to their doping authority or federation by means of the whereabouts app," says Ron de Mos, Senior Vice-President & General Manager of CGI in the Netherlands.
Active use in the Netherlands
During the Olympic Games in London, the majority of the Dutch top athletes were active users of the whereabouts app: 98 of the approximate total of 170 participants (about 58%). In addition, 49 of the Dutch participants in the Paralympics also actively used the app. Apart from the Olympic Games, some 300 elite athletes are required to forward their whereabouts to the Dutch Doping Authority, 90% using the app.
Swimmer Hinkelien Schreuder, an Olympic silver medallist with the 4x100 metres freestyle relay team, is a great advocate of the whereabouts app. Being a member of the NOC*NSF Athletes' Committee, Schreuder devotes herself to the cause of all elite athletes in The Netherlands. "The whereabouts app is a perfect development for all top athletes in the international testing pool. It has made a lot easier for them to manage the administrative obligations related to their whereabouts," Schreuder says.
