Reliant Launches Free Weekends with a Nest Thermostat

17:32 EDT Monday, April 22, 2013

HOUSTON (Business Wire) -- When Friday night rolls around, be sure to put your feet up and save. With the Reliant Free WeekendsSM 24 plan, customers get 24 months of price security, a free energy charge all weekend long, plus the opportunity to save energy with a Nest Learning ThermostatTM. That's cool savings and potential energy conservation without lifting a finger.

The Reliant Free Weekends24 plan is the first of its kind and the second Reliant plan to include a Nest Learning Thermostat. The Nest learns about the customer's lifestyle to automatically adjust the temperature when family members are home or away, making it even easier to manage energy use.

The new Reliant Free Weekends 24 plan reflects the expansion of Reliant's successful partnership with Nest Labs, Inc. that began in 2012 with the Reliant Learn & ConserveSM plan featuring the Nest Learning ThermostatTM. Reliant was the first and only retail electricity provider in Texas to offer the Nest Learning Thermostat to help customers understand and conserve energy use.

To further Reliant's commitment of giving customers the tools to better manage their energy use, Reliant has combined its Degrees of Difference program with the smart features of the Nest, making energy conservation effortless. The Reliant Degrees of Difference program offers customers the opportunity to earn credits on their electricity bill when they are able to conserve during times of expected high electricity usage.

“As the first electricity provider in Texas to offer the Nest, Reliant is delighted to expand our relationship to provide Texas consumers more innovative products and services that include the Nest thermostat,” said Reliant President Elizabeth Killinger. “We are passionate about providing customers smart tools to help save electricity, and our new plans featuring the Nest will help Texans join forces to reduce electricity usage during peak periods when the state needs it most.”

With the Reliant Degrees of Difference program and the Reliant Free Weekends 24 plan, in addition to the Reliant Learn & Conserve plan, consumers have three ways to take advantage of hassle-free energy conservation with Nest. The Nest learns about the customer's lifestyle and automatically adjusts the temperature accordingly. And, the customer is always in control by using the device or mobile app.

“The Nest is simple to use and our Airwave feature alone can help reduce AC runtime by up to 30 percent,” said Matt Rogers, Nest Labs, Inc. founder and Vice President of Engineering. “We are thrilled to expand our work with Reliant, and we're looking forward to continuing to find new ways to help introduce savings and energy awareness into more homes.”

Options with the Nest

With three options featuring the Nest thermostat, Reliant is giving consumers the tools and information they need to better manage their electricity use and change the way they think about energy. The options include:

  • The Reliant Free Weekends 24 plan offers a competitive price during the week and a free energy charge from 8pm Friday until 12am Monday. By shifting electricity use to the weekends, customers can save money and help ease the demand on the state's electricity grid. The plan is available starting April 26.
  • The Reliant Learn & ConserveSM 24 plan is a fixed-price plan that provides customers with one free Nest Learning Thermostat. The Nest thermostat learns a customer's preferred temperature and keeps them comfortable while helping save on energy.
  • The Reliant Degrees of Difference with Nest program offers customers the opportunity to earn credits on their electricity bills when they are able to reduce electricity usage during periods of high demand also known as energy rush hours. This program helps customers support their communities by helping ease the strain on the electric grid during these energy rush hours. Combining the existing Reliant Degrees of Difference program with the smart features of the Nest makes saving electricity effortless.
