ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Business Wire) -- Aetna (NYSE: AET) has been honored with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley's Community Caring Award. The award was presented to 18 Lehigh Valley area organizations that increased their United Way campaign giving by more than $10,000 last year.

Aetna employees raised nearly $60,000 in their 2012 United Way campaign, an increase of $20,000 from the 2011 total. Employee donations were supplemented by an additional $9,000 in funds from the Aetna Foundation.

“Aetna is honored to be recognized by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley,” said Patrick Young, president of Aetna's Pennsylvania and Delaware operations. “In the Lehigh Valley, and in many other places across the country, Aetna employees have a proud history of supporting the philanthropic efforts of the United Way. Our employees, who live and work in this area, have come through time after time.”

“We're proud to recognize Aetna with this award, since as the name suggests, it's about organizations who truly care about creating opportunities for all people in the Lehigh Valley to have a good life,” said David Lewis, acting president, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. “The award also represents commitment and passion to achieving a goal, and Aetna has gone above and beyond in the campaign to support our community.”

Aetna provides health benefits to more than 1 million people in Pennsylvania. The company employs more than 4,000 people in the state, including more than 400 in Aetna's Allentown office.
