DFC Global Corp. Completes Acquisition of Pawn Store Chain in Romania

08:00 EDT Monday, June 03, 2013

BERWYN, Pa. (Business Wire) -- DFC Global Corp. (NASDAQ: DLLR), a leading international diversified financial services company serving primarily unbanked and under-banked consumers for over 30 years, today announced the next step in its European pawn expansion strategy with the acquisition of Express Credit, a leading pawn loan provider in Romania.

Express Credit Amanet, founded in 1998, operates a chain of 32 stores predominantly in the city of Iasi, Romania. In concert with DFC Global's European pawn expansion strategy, the acquired stores primarily offer pawn lending on gold jewelry, small-size high-value electronics and automobiles, in addition to gold buying services. This acquisition also represents the Company's initial foray into pawn lending on items outside of jewelry and fine watches. The trailing twelve months revenue for the acquired stores was approximately $9.0 million at the closing of the transaction and the acquisition is accretive to earnings.

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Express Credit and our entrance into Romania, a country with a longstanding tradition for pawn lending as a primary source of credit for a variety of socio-economic groups,” said Jeff Weiss, DFC Global Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “In Romania, it is fairly typical for people to pawn their gold jewelry, diamonds and watches in order to supplement short-term credit needs, and then redeem the pawned items when the line of credit is no longer needed. In fact, a customer often pawns and redeems the same item many times during their lifetime as the need for short-term credit arises, especially given that these loans are relatively inexpensive and very easy to understand and transact. The use of pawn lending as a collateralized revolving line of credit is normal for our target ARTI (Asset Rich, Temporarily Illiquid) customer demographic, particularly in many European societies.”

“Our European strategy remains the same – to consolidate the pawn lending industry in selected European countries by leveraging our extensive product knowledge, strong management team and back-office infrastructure,” continued Mr. Weiss. “In addition, we have a large base of multi-national, multi-lingual and well trained pawn lending store employees in the U.K. that can be deployed to help manage stores in many of the countries we are looking to enter. Similar to Poland and Spain, further expansion of pawn lending in Romania will be managed through our European pawn lending office based in London, which is responsible for the development of our pawn lending business in Europe outside of the U.K. Pawn lending has become a material contributor to our top line over the past couple of years, and we expect it will remain a significant part of our overall growth strategy in the years ahead.”
