Aetna Student Health Helps Parents and Students Prepare to Head Back to School

14:37 EDT Thursday, July 11, 2013

HARTFORD, Conn. (Business Wire) -- While most people think of the summer months as time off from school, Aetna (NYSE: AET) is encouraging college students and parents to use this time to prepare to go back to school. One of the more overlooked back-to-school planning items is health benefits. Summer is the perfect time to explore health benefit choices, so once school starts, parents and students know which option is best for their situation.

Over the past year, Aetna Student Health has been researching and investing in new tools to help parents and students decide which health benefit option is best for them. One of the new tools is “Do the Math,” which helps to break down various expenses associated with health insurance benefits, not just premiums, to show the “true cost” of health care. Another option is an educational tool which simulates a conversation between a parent or student and a health insurance plan adviser in order to help make an informed and educated decision about health insurance options.

In addition, Aetna Student Health has updated its online application enrollment and waiver process to be easier to understand and use. The streamlined student health site was updated to reflect feedback from students and parents. The site uses clear, simple language, increases accessibility and offers additional enhancements such as quicker transaction times, notification of enrollment status and a confirmation receipt.

“One major advantage of utilizing a student health insurance plan is that it is tailored to the specific needs of students,” said Scott Champagne, head of New Business for Aetna Student Health. “Aetna works very closely with colleges and universities to make sure our plans are in line with student lifestyles.”

Even if parents or students have looked at student health insurance plans in previous years, now might be a good time to re-evaluate them. Student health plans typically offer lower premiums and lower cost-sharing compared to other options. Student health plans complement campus health centers and counseling services and also offer access to travel assistance programs that include medical evacuation when students travel overseas. These benefits and programs, combined with worldwide coverage, might make a student health plan the right choice for parents and their college students.
